CoasterRadio.com #508 - The Terminator is Terminated

If you went back and listened to every single episode of Coaster Radio, you'd probably notice that the theme park topic we discuss the most is theming.

It's the one thing that separates a great park from an average amusement park.

That's why it was a bit of surprise when we learned that Six Flags would be dropping the licenses for properties like Thomas the Tank Engine, The Wiggles, Tony Hawk, Evil Kenevil and Terminator.

EB and Mike will take a look at the situation and give you their unique spin.  Does it really matter that these themes are going away?

And even though the Thanksgiving holiday is over, the guys hear from the listeners as they discuss what they are thankful for from the 2010 park season.

Plus, CoasterRadio.com was nominated for Best Travel Podcast in the 2010 Podcast Awards!

You can vote for the show once a day through December 15th.

EB and Mike discuss the meaning of the award and how half of the nominees are Disney related!  The guys also receive a visit from a Disney podcaster who has a nasty message for CoasterRadio.com.

An Equation For Happiness

We received this e-mail from Travis in California....

"I just thought I would send you this nifty photo. First of all, I wanted to do another photo representing from Captain EO (which was quite enjoyable for me), but I also was joined by a good buddy. Doug Barnes from the Season Pass Podcast was here a few weekends ago and we hung out for a while. Now that I am a correspondent of The Season Pass Podcast (having been a guest host on the 2009 Halloween episode), we are both huge supporters of your show and we want to send our love to you guys."

Oh Pioneers?

Back when I was producing the podcast, there would be some weeks where I would have trouble coming up with new content.

Most times, I would design a new contest or find a guest that normally wouldn't be on a theme park show.

I guess the guys at the Season Pass Podcast had a similar problem this week. But to fill time, they decided to talk about us.

They were kind enough to say that CoasterRadio.com was a pioneering podcast for the theme park industry. They even went so far to call me a "podcast celebrity". (For the record, I don't believe that at all.)

In this episode, you hear them talk about their favorite moments from the show and for some reason, Nick Hutson is there playing live selections from the CoasterBoy Musical. Anything to fill time, right?

YOU LIE! YOU LIE!

Talk about this in the CoasterRadio.com Forums.

State of the Theme Park Podcast Industry

April 25th will mark the three year anniversary of CoasterRadio.com's first podcast. If all goes well, we'll mark the occasion by releasing a special new podcast to commemorate the event.

When we first started the show back in 2005, there was only one other internet-based show on the internet... In The Loop. There was always much debate as to who was first, but there's an easy answer. They were on the internet months ahead of us... but we were the first to produce our show as a "podcast".

Regardless, we were the first two theme park (non-Disney) podcasts on the internet.

By my count, there are now 17 different theme park related podcasts that aren't Disney specific. Some are created by the parks themselves, but most are produced by fans.

In The Loop Daily
ITL Presents the Coaster Crew's Guide to the Midway
The Season Pass Podcast
PointCast from Cedar Point
A Walk in the Park Podcast
The Kevin and Nate Show
Theme Park Thrill Radio
Six Flags Over Georgia Podcast
Six Flags Great America Podcast
Dottie's Dollywood Dish
CoasterCast
Coaster Velocity
North Ohio Parks Podcast
Coasterbuzz Podcast
CoasterRide (German)
Great America Experience Podcast
Rex and the Beast Podcast

I think it's pretty cool that so many new shows have come on-line. I also think it's great that each show is completely different. No matter what you're in to, you should be able to find a show that fits your tastes.

What do you think of the state of Theme Park podcasts? Talk about it in the CoasterRadio.com forums.
